ATWATER, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) — Questions continue at the United States Penitentiary in Atwater following the death of a worker at the penitentiary.

Thursday, a closed memorial service was held to honor Marc Fischer, who lost his life on August 9 after exposure to mail laced with what authorities say were illicit substances including fentanyl.

“We have to set a precedence here. We have to prove a point. This is not okay. This is something our staff are exposed to continually,” said Brandy Moore-White, the national president of the Council of Prison Locals 33. “This shouldn’t have happened this could have been prevented,” she said.

Moore-White said she is more than frustrated after the 23-year Federal Bureau of Prisons worker lost his life.
