High School Principal Punished For ‘Inappropriate’ Dance With School Mascot

Robert Nunes , the principal of Buhach Colony High School in Atwater, California, has resigned from his position following an investigation into his behavior during a back-to-school rally . The Merced Union High School District (MUHSD) confirmed that Nunes, who was filmed dancing with the school mascot, Thor, at the rally, will now serve as an associate principal at the same school. His resignation took effect on Thursday, September 5.

The video of the incident, which was recorded by a 14-year-old freshman, showed Nunes and Thor dancing to Ginuwine ‘s “Pony” with Nunes popping a confetti cannon. The dance moves were likened by some in the community to a traditional lap dance , leading to controversy and Nunes being placed on administrative leave on Monday, August 19.

MUHSD Executive Director Torrin Johnson , who served as Interim Principal while Nunes was on administrative leave, will continue in the role until further notice. The principal position will open in the Spring of 2025 to find a permanent principal.
