Stockton parents arrested after 2-year-old girl dies in family home

(FOX40.COM) — A mother and father were arrested after their 2-year-old daughter was found dead in her home, according to the Stockton Police Department.

Around 3:15 a.m. on Monday, Stockton Fire and American Medical Response responded to a residence in the 300 block of W Oak Street for a report of an unresponsive 2-year-old girl. The child was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to SPD. Police said the victim was “malnourished, appeared extremely emaciated, and had clear signs of neglect.”

Both parents were brought in and questioned by Stockton PD about the incident. Subsequently, Jessica Chavez, 39, and Gregorio Ornelas, 61, were arrested in connection to child abuse resulting in death and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail.

The investigation is ongoing.
