California digital driver’s license and ID cards can now be added to Apple Wallet

Apple Wallet support for California digital driver’s licenses and state ID cards is now available, the tech company announced Thursday.

“Californians now have the option of adding their driver’s license or state ID to their iPhone or Apple Watch in Apple Wallet,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement. “With this new integration, we’re working to better serve the people of California in the 21st century.”

The rollout of digital state driver’s licenses and ID support in Apple Wallet is part of a broader mobile driver’s license (mDL) pilot program launched last year.

Californians can add a digital version of their driver’s license or state ID card by clicking the “+” button at the top of the screen in the Wallet app on their iPhone, selecting “Driver’s License or State ID,” and following the onscreen instructions to start the setup and verification process.

Android users can also add digital driver’s licenses and state IDs on Google Wallet.

It’s important to note that digital licenses or ID cards won’t replace the requirement for individuals to carry a physical card. According to the DMV, law enforcement, state government agencies and some businesses have not begun to accept them.
