Turlock road rage incident led to fatal stabbing, police say. Suspect arrested

A “brief verbal altercation” related to a road rage incident at a Turlock apartment complex Friday night escalated to a physical confrontation and resulted in a man being fatally stabbed, according to police.

Turlock police officers were dispatched to the 2400 block of West Monte Vista Avenue — near the complex — around 10:30 p.m.

They found the victim, 49-year-old Enrique Gomez from Turlock, on the ground and began administering first aid, according to a news release. Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives identified the suspect and his vehicle using witness statements and evidence.

Modesto resident Ahmad Abweny, 28, was arrested hours after the incident. Detectives collaborated with the Modesto Police Department and used license plate reader technology to locate him.

Abweny was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on murder charges.

“This case demonstrates the power of modern technology in enhancing public safety and ensuring prompt resolution for any crime committed in our city,” said Turlock Police Chief Jason Hedden.
