Amtrak’s expansion through Stanislaus County is getting a boost from an $18.7 million federal grant announced on October 29. The funds will be used to build second tracks and new boarding platforms at the Modesto and Denair stations, helping passenger and freight trains move smoothly without delays, according to Edward Barrera of Caltrans.
The project’s total $35 million cost will be split between the federal grant and Caltrans funding, as part of its partnership with Amtrak San Joaquins to support rail service operations and infrastructure.
The new investment adds to an existing $1.8 billion aimed at improving rail service in the Central Valley and Bay Area, with initial phases expected to start by late 2026. Amtrak currently offers five round trips between Bakersfield and Oakland, with a sixth route connecting Stockton and Sacramento. The expansion will bring 12 total trips, including six Sacramento-bound.
The expanded network could eventually connect to California’s high-speed rail in Merced, pending additional funding of about $3 billion for the project.
