She was stabbed, run over by serial domestic abuser in Modesto. Now killer faces justice

A Ceres man pleaded guilty earlier this week to the murder of his girlfriend, who was stabbed multiple times before being hit by his car.

Ruben Olvera, 33, was dating Michell Gonzalez, 33, in February. Olvera had a history of domestic violence, according to law enforcement officials.

On February 16, Olvera was driving Gonzalez down Highway 99 in Modesto when he stabbed her. Gonzalez jumped out of the car and tried to escape as the car exited the highway near central Modesto.

Witnesses said they saw Gonzalez, on foot, screaming. Olvera then struck her with his car, killing her. He fled the scene, but law enforcement caught up with him the next day. He surrendered to a uniformed patrol sergeant with the Modesto Police Department on Feb. 17.

Olvera faces life in prison. He’s scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 21 at the Stanislaus County Superior Courthouse. The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Fawn Smolak.
