Modesto Police to crack down on drivers using cell phones

(FOX40.COM) — Modesto Police will conduct enforcement operations this December on drivers suspected of violating the hands-free cell phone law.

According to a Facebook post, Modesto PD will be doing this operation for the remaining days of the year.

Using a phone while driving is punishable by a fine and when violated a second time within 36 months of the original citation will result in a point being added to the driver’s record.

Modesto PD suggests that if you do have an important call or need to program directions, to pull over to a safe parking spot and silence your phone before driving.

“A driver’s focus should be on the road, not their phone,” Sergeant Robert Hall said. “That text, phone call, email or social media post is not worth the risk to yourself and other people on the road.”

California’s current law says that drivers are not allowed to hold a phone or any electronic communication device while operating a vehicle including texting, talking, or using any apps, although adults can use a phone in hands-free mode.
