Rooster fighting operation shut down in Northern California; nearly 70 birds seized

( FOX40.COM ) — Officials in San Joaquin County broke up a rooster fighting and illegal gambling operation near Lodi in early 2025, leading to the arrest of two people and the seizure of dozens of birds presumably used for fighting.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said that deputies responded to an area along Atkins Road, east of Lodi, on Saturday after a report of rooster fighting and gambling.

When deputies arrived, they found five dead roosters and several live ones inside of boxes.

While searching the property, deputies found 30 more dead roosters and around 65 live ones, the sheriff’s office said.

Various items related to bird fighting were found, including gaffs, spurs and leashes, as well as a large wooden structure with “stadium seating” inside of a barn.

Pictures shared by the agency show the wooden fighting arena and several passenger vehicles inside of a barn-like structure, along with pictures of several dead roosters on the ground and in a container.
