Urgent issues with Stockton hydrants revealed after massive fire, officials say

(FOX40.COM) — A massive fire that engulfed a Stockton warehouse uncovered hydrant failures and a slew of other safety issues, according to the city’s mayor and vice mayor. • Video Above: Changing Stockton: A live discussion with Stockton leadership

On April 2, a fire broke out at a warehouse in the 2400 block of South California Street, across from McKinley Park. The fire quickly escalated to a 3-alarm emergency that required more than 40 firefighters to battle it.

“This fire exposed shortcomings that date back to previous leadership,” said Mayor Christina Fugazi.

Fugazi said former city officials gave assurance that the system was fully operational, however, recent developments suggest otherwise.

“We’re going to get to the bottom of why city leadership was told one thing, only to discover another. Stockton cannot afford to ignore critical infrastructure,” Fugazi said. “Across California, we’ve seen how wildfire emergencies—especially in areas like Los Angeles—were made worse when water access was limited or, in some cases, non-existent at the hydrants. We will not let that happen here.”…
