Shadows and substance: Shadows are the subject of the latest Readers Photo Challenge

The Readers Photo Challenge will give you the chance to embrace your dark side because this month’s subject is “shadows.”

You can photograph a shadow using anything from a high-end digital camera to the smartphone in your back pocket. An overcast sky, shaded lamp or any other diffused light source will produce indistinct shadows. Whether you shoot outdoors or indoors, the only thing you really need is a strong, unfiltered light source such as a bare light bulb or a bright sunny sky.

Shooting at around midday your outdoor shadows will be projected down onto the ground. Those shadows will be kind of short and stubby. For every hour before or after noon the shadows will grow in length. Get too far away from the 12 noon hour, your shadows will become distorted and stretched…
