Two people die after Jeep plunges into creek under I-5 in Northern California

Around 5:11 p.m., the California Highway Patrol responded to a call about a traffic collision on southbound Interstate 5, north of Howard Road. When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they found a jeep fully engulfed in flames in Ingram’s Creek, underneath the freeway.

The driver, a 21-year-old man from Tracy, and a passenger, a 23-year-old man from Tracy, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP. Police suspect the jeep was traveling southbound in the fast lane when, for unknown reasons, it veered to the left shoulder and went down the embankment. From there, it landed in the creek, which was dry at the time.

Somehow, the jeep caught fire and became fully engulfed. Police said a passing motorist stopped, ran down the embankment, and extricated the right front passenger without causing any significant harm to himself…
