Modesto secures nearly $18 million to convert old motel into housing for veterans

(FOX40.COM)– The city of Modesto is making another new investment towards fighting homelessness—this time, it’s focused on veterans.

Officials have secured nearly $18 million in state funding through California’s Project Homekey + to convert the old El Capitan motel on Needham Street into permanent supportive housing.

The project will create 48 studio apartments for veterans who are homeless or at risk of being homeless, individuals with serious mental health illnesses, and one unit for management.

“All of the hotel rooms are going to be converted into studio apartments, and so all of them will have a kitchenette to ensure that this can be a permanent place for them to live,” said Jessica Hill, director for the city’s Community and Economic Development Department.
