Big rig fire shuts down I-580 westbound, sparks brush fire in Altamont Pass

A big rig fire shut down all westbound lanes of Interstate 580 early Friday morning, triggering a brush fire and paralyzing traffic west of Tracy, officials said.

The 18-wheeler, hauling a load of almonds, caught fire around 4:30 a.m. east of Flynn and Grantline roads, according to the Alameda County Fire Department.

The blaze quickly spread to nearby vegetation, prompting a response from both Alameda County and Cal Fire crews.
