‘This is about fairness and respect’: Safeway workers to strike Saturday if deal not reached

Safeway employees might strike as early as Saturday, July 26 in Northern and Central California if United Food and Commercial Workers Locals 5, 8, and 648, and the grocery retail chain don’t reach an agreement by midnight.

On July 17, the UFCW Local 5 shared an update on its website stating a strike would begin if an agreement was not reached by midnight on Saturday. The UFCW 8-Golden State said Thursday a strike could begin as early as 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, July 26 at Safeway locations.

“Our International Union and the California State Federation of Labor stand in support of Safeway workers and have sanctioned a strike if called by the unions,” UFCW Local 5 said in a statement…
