Stockton Fire Department faces staffing issues amid contract dispute

(FOX40.COM) – Stockton firefighters are now on day 44 with no new contract after months of trying to initiate an agreement with officials.

Local 456, the union representing the city’s firefighters, said the issue centers on staff retention, with Stockton competing against other departments in the state offering higher wages on Wednesday.

Devin Robson, the union’s president, said they first brought the matter to the city’s attention in February.

“It’s always hurtful to be going past without a contract. It does send a message to our people, our members, that the city’s unwilling to work with us or there’s hesitation for maybe the firm to work with us,” said Robson.
