Adoption event to feature shelter dogs in Olympic-style games

(FOX40.com) –- This weekend, about 20 shelter dogs will go head-to-head for a gold medal in the first-annual Shelter Dog Olympics and Adoption Event. The event is at River Park South in Lathrop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 16.

Five agencies across the region, including Lathrop Police Department, Tracy Police Department, Turlock Police Department, Manteca Police Department and Pets & Pals Animal Shelter, have been organizing the event for close to a year.

Shelter dogs have gotten consistent training on several obstacle courses to show their agility, athleticism, and obedience. Each agency is vying for the gold medal, but most importantly, to find each dog a new home.

“It’s really exciting because not only do they get to be at different events, it’s also an event where the community can come and adopt the dogs for free,” Lathrop Police Department Captain Richard Barries said…
