STOCKTON, Calif. — Parishioners at Saint Gertrude’s Church near downtown Stockton are calling for action, saying safety outside their church has become a growing concern.
Volunteer and parishioner Marco Lazaro spends every Sunday outside the church on Main Street helping people cross safely. With four masses each Sunday, Lazaro said speeding cars make his job critical.
“I’m not going to lie, we have had close calls, but luckily we catch them at the last minute and tell them to hold up,” Lazaro said. “We had one right now, like a couple of minutes ago. Homeboy was ready to walk into the street without looking at the cars. I told him to hold up and that’s when a car passed by… only God knows what would’ve happened.”…
