Modesto Probationer Arrested During Angels Camp Traffic Stop, Found with Drugs and Stolen Copper

December 16, 2025 – Angels Camp, CA – Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on December 4th, at approximately 3:00 a.m., a Calaveras County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on an SUV for a registration violation. The stop occurred in the area of Red Hill Road and Highway 49 in Angels Camp.

The driver, later identified as John Evans, 37, of Modesto, did not immediately pull over and continued for approximately half a mile before stopping, despite several available pullouts along the roadway. An enforcement stop was ultimately conducted, and Sheriff’s Dispatch confirmed that the suspect, Evans, was on active searchable probation.

Evans exited the vehicle to allow the deputy to safely search the vehicle. While searching the SUV, the deputy discovered suspected methamphetamine hidden inside a drink container in the center console. The search also revealed additional methamphetamine in a bag on the front passenger seat, as well as a glass pipe used for smoking methamphetamine on the ground near where Evans had been standing. In addition to the illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia, deputies also discovered several tools commonly associated with burglary, large storage totes containing several hundred pounds of copper wiring and 20–25 cut sections of copper, all believed to be stolen. Suspect Evans was taken into custody without incident for narcotics, theft-related offenses, as well as for violating his active probation. He was transported to the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office for booking, where he was charged with 3 Misdemeanors and 3 Felonies…
