On a foggy morning with temperatures starting at 41 degrees, 77 volunteers fanned out across Modesto to count the city’s residents experiencing homelessness.
The annual Stanislaus County point-in-time count provides a snapshot of the number of people experiencing homelessness on a single January night. The count at shelters was conducted the day before and together the data help determine how much funding the region can receive for homelessness services.
Volunteers began their work early, covering 37 assigned zones throughout the city. They carried backpacks to distribute stocked with beanies, hand warmers, socks, gloves, toiletries, water bottles and blankets. The kits help build rapport and encourage people to participate in the survey…
