Merced, CA (February 24, 2026) — The California Highway Patrol Merced Area recently honored three officers during a training day ceremony for actions reflecting dedication to public safety.
According to CHP Merced, Captain Dominguez presented Officer John Patterson with a Certificate of Commendation for his actions on November 4, 2025, on State Route 99 at the Golf Road overcrossing in Stanislaus County. Patterson responded to a report of a potential jumper and recognized the young man from an earlier contact that same day.
Although initially unsuccessful in engaging him, Patterson remained on scene for nearly an hour, continuing efforts to communicate. Through professionalism, dignity, and compassion, he ultimately convinced the individual to accept help and prevented him from harming himself or others…
