Convicted murderer apprehended after escape from federal custody in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah man convicted of murder, aggravated sexual assault and fraud, among several other crimes, has been apprehended after failing to return to a federal halfway house in Salt Lake City last month.

Frank Gene Powell, 57, has been booked into the San Joaquin County Jail. U.S. Marshals in the Eastern District of California worked with Stockton Police on Thursday to take Powell into custody after receiving a “collateral lead” from Utah, according to a statement from the U.S. Marshals Service.
