Citizens’ commission considers 46% raise for Stockton City Council

A citizens’ commission reviewing compensation for elected officials is considering an increase to Stockton City Council salaries, including a proposal to raise annual pay to $45,000 — about a 46% increase from current levels — as it prepares for a public hearing later this month.

During a meeting on Thursday, March 12, city staff presented information requested by the Council Salary Setting Commission, including legal guidelines, comparisons with other California cities and projections showing how various raises would affect council pay.

Stockton operates under a city charter and is not bound by salary limits set for general law cities under California Government Code section 36516. That law caps compensation for councilmembers in general law cities at $3,200 per month, with annual increases of up to 5% until the cap is reached.
