Lathrop woman sentenced to prison for more than $1.2M IRS fraud scheme

A Lathrop woman was sentenced to 18 months in prison for defrauding the Internal Revenue Service of more than $1.2 million.

Amy Evangelista, 60, was sentenced Thursday, March 19 for two counts of aiding or assisting in the preparation or presentation of a false or fraudulent tax return, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California.

U.S. Attorney Eric Grant said Evangelista β€œbetrayed her clients and the American public” by creating fake companies and business expenses that resulted in $1.23 million in fraudulent tax refunds. She helped file approximately 1,087 fraudulent income tax returns that contained false Schedule C, which resulted in a loss of $1,234,430 for the IRS…
