The Modesto Marathon disqualified the first runner to cross the finish line because a confused lead biker shortened the competitor’s race by about 1.5 miles.
Los Angeles runner Benjamin Enowitz told his story of distance race heartbreak to the Modesto Bee in a story published Tuesday. He crossed the finish line at two hours and 20 minutes, but his data from Strava, a popular workout-tracking app, showed he only ran 24.64 of the marathon-standard 26.2 miles. As Enowitz told it, the biker who was supposed to guide the runner told him he wasn’t totally sure where the turnaround part of the course was.
At first, the biker thought he overshot the turnaround, but he later found out the opposite had happened…
