‘Swimming is a life skill’: Local sorority hosts free clinic for ages 2–21

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority’s Beta Sigma Alumni Chapter held a free swim clinic to teach kids water safety and basic swimming skills, aiming to reduce drownings and close access gaps.

Organizer Tiffany Fitzgerald says the clinic is free to make it accessible despite tight family budgets and serves ages 2–21, providing gear (goggles, cap, water bottle) and instruction from YMCA lifeguards, plus a special guest.

That guest is Alia Atkinson (Jamaican Olympian/world champion and Sigma Gamma Rho member), who says the program helps break generational barriers and myths about people of color swimming by creating positive first experiences in the water and increasing representation in the sport…
