Strong storms expected across Alabama later today; Risk area expanded

DRY MORNING; STORMY EVENING: Alabama’s weather will be generally rain-free this morning, but high resolution models continue to advertise an organized band of thunderstorms dropping southward through the state late this afternoon and tonight. SPC has defined a “slight risk” (level 2/5) over the northwest counties of the state, with a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) down into South Alabama.

Strong straight line winds are possible with these storms; with the ground saturated in many areas some trees could come down even with winds of 40-50 mph. Wind profiles do not support tornado formation; in fact we are officially out of tornado season. In Alabama it runs from November through May…
