Jackson Hospital asks Montgomery County to pass new tax as restructuring efforts continue

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – As Jackson Hospital continues to negotiate with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama to keep their doors open, the Hospital is now urging Montgomery city and county leaders to consider a special ad valorem tax, which they say is essential to ensure the hospital’s “long-term stability.”

On July 3, Jackson Hospital announced it had reached a “verbal” agreement with the insurance provider that would allow the financially-troubled institution to remain open. The hospital had previously sought higher reimbursement rates from the insurer to help with its finances.

In a letter sent to city and county leaders a day prior, Charles Evans, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Jackson Hospital laid out multiple funding requests, including an additional $4.2 million in funds for 2027, which would be split evenly between the city and county, and for the county to support a referendum on a new tax that would go towards hospital and public health services…
