WETUMPKA, Ala. (WSFA) – Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey is reacting after a federal case involving oversight of a state women’s prison was dismissed this week after more than a decade.
The Alabama attorney general’s office says U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson dismissed the case and a consent decree for the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women, located in Wetumpka.
The dismissal came after the U.S. Department of Justice and the state of Alabama agreed to terminate the remaining terms of the consent decree that had governed Tutwiler operations since 2015.
The attorney general’s office said all 44 requirements of the decree, which was meant to reform staff training, policies, and how abuse allegations are handled, were all met, allowing the case to be closed…
