Alabama’s Healthcare High School to Address Shortages Welcomes First Students

First proposed by Gov. Ivey in 2023, the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences has officially welcomed its first students, making history and becoming the state’s newest residential specialty high school.

The tuition-free public school enrolled 79 inaugural students representing 45 communities across Alabama for its first semester.

The school is initially operating on the campus of the University of West Alabama in Livingston as construction continues on its permanent campus in Demopolis.

HSHS is an attempt to address the state’s growing healthcare workforce shortage, particularly in rural communities.  Gov. Ivey, during her 2023 State of the State address, called for a healthcare-focused residential high school in Demopolis to help prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals.
