A single insurance company dominates Alabama. Doctors, patients say the impact can be ‘devastating’

When Elijah Briggs woke up from a coma this summer, his doctors were optimistic.

Despite suffering a brain bleed and undergoing multiple surgeries, he could sit up in a wheelchair and give a thumbs-up. These were signs, according to his neurologist, that the 23-year-old had a chance at meaningful recovery.

“His doctors always told us there was no magic wand or any way to see into the future,” said his mom, Samantha Briggs. “But he had a full opportunity to recover.”…
