‘More than the last three years combined’: 32% of 2026 Montgomery homicides the result of domestic violence, mayor says

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed is sounding the alarm on a disturbing crime trend in the Capital City this year: domestic violence.

“It continues to have a very, very outsized impact on our community. The sad reality is we have had 13 homicides out of the 41 that have been domestic violence related. That’s more than the last three years combined,” Reed said. “We have to make sure that we’re working with our partners and our nonprofits who are in this space to support them and keep them with the type of resources that they need. We also have to make sure that as individuals and as a collective, we are working with families and friends to identify issues of stress, to identify issues of tension, to make sure they don’t just blow up and explode in an act that no one can take back.”

Reed added that MPD officers have responded to over 800 domestic violence calls this year, which equates to almost three calls a day…
