Killing of Montgomery student Michael Anthony Cole shakes city

Montgomery police arrested two teens in the killing of a 16-year-old high schooler that shook the city on Tuesday, the same day as the mayor’s annual state-of-the-city address.

Michael Anthony Cole Jr., 16, went missing Thursday, and police found him dead with a fatal gunshot wound at about 10:50 p.m. Monday in the 6500 block of Selma Highway. The department charged Nedvin Jones and Nicholas Sheppard, both 18, with murder. They are in the Montgomery jail without bond, Police Chief Darryl Albert said.

Mayor Steven Reed said after his state-of-the-city address that the city needs to address youth violence, though he did not comment on Cole’s death specifically.

According to court documents, judges have assigned both Jones and Sheppard attorneys. Judge Tiffany McCord will oversee Jones’ case, but documents do not yet show a judge assigned to Sheppard’s case.

Albert confirmed that Cole knew Jones and Sheppard but did not provide a motive. He called Tuesday for the community to “put down the guns” after Cole’s shooting death.
