The United Auto Workers made an announcement this week that their campaign to unionize the Hyundai factory in Montgomery, Alabama, has successfully enrolled more than 30% of its 4,000 employees. This marks the third factory in the UAW’s recent organizing efforts to publicly declare their unionization. The autoworkers at Hyundai in Montgomery, Alabama, have impressively recruited over 30% of their approximately 4,000 colleagues in their determined push for unionization. The UAW shared their accomplishment through a new video titled “Hyundai Can’t Wait,” which highlights the connection between the labor movement and civil rights movement. The video features workers mentioning Montgomery as the city where Rosa Parks made her stand, and now thousands of Hyundai workers are also prepared to stand up for their rights.
“There’s something about our fight to unionize being homegrown that makes it just that much sweeter,” said Quichelle Liggins, a twelve-year quality inspector at Hyundai.
“All I can tell my people to do is be bold and intentional. Just like the leaders of the civil rights movement, we’re linking together one by one. One person had to say, ‘Hey, it’s time for us to make a difference!’ And then several other people had to agree, and now we have a group of workers that feel the same way.”
