Southern Homes & Gardens is closing after being in business in Montgomery for about 45 years.
The nursery and greenhouse originally opened in 1979 on Wetumpka Highway, before moving to its current location at 8820 Vaughn Road in 2005. The store will close at the end of March, and the property and buildings will become part of an expanded Christchurch Anglican campus, the store has announced on its Facebook page.
The church is next to the Southern Homes property.
“For the past four decades Southern Homes & Gardens has endeavored to provide the people of Central Alabama with a beautiful place to shop for their homes and gardens,” said Lamar Thompson, chief executive officer. “Now operating as a third-generation, family-run business, we have made the decision to focus on our strongest areas of our business, manufacturing in Asia wholesale live plants and real estate.”
Capitol’s Rosemont Gardens and Caffco Floral Outlet, the family’s other retail businesses on Wetumpka Highway, will continue to operate.
