A Montgomery, Alabama, police officer stands accused of making multiple false reports to neighboring Prattville, sparking potentially dangerous responses, according to a report by WSFA 12.
Six Calls Over Three Months: The officer, who has been identified as 23-year-old Christopher Eugene Sanspree Jr., allegedly placed at least six calls to Prattville police over a three-month period, beginning in October 2023.
Fabricated Emergencies: These calls reported fabricated emergencies, including shootings, car break-ins, and individuals brandishing machetes. These reports, known as “swatting,” can lead to heavily armed police responses, posing significant risks to both officers and civilians.
On-Duty Perpetrator: Notably, Sanspree was on duty with the Montgomery Police Department at the time of the calls. He was arrested and released on bond, and currently faces administrative action within his department.
Motive Unclear: Chief Mark Thompson of the Prattville Police Department expressed frustration at the incident, stating Sanspree offered “he thought it was funny” as a reason for his actions. The investigation seeks to uncover the full extent of Sanspree’s involvement and potential connections to similar incidents beyond Alabama.
