Montgomery dancer, teacher Foye DuBose dies at 53 after decades of guiding young artists

The steps of his life weren’t easy, but they were his own. Along the way, dancer and dance teacher Foye DuBose III of Montgomery inspired hundreds of young artists to find their paths as well.

After suffering health challenges in recent years, DuBose passed away Saturday, Sept. 14, two days short of what would have been his 54th birthday on Sept. 16.

“Dance was his life, and you could see and feel the passion he had for it,” said longtime friend Sara Sanford, assistant director and resident choreographer for Alabama Dance Theatre.

Services will be Saturday, Sept. 21, 4 p.m. in the Alfredia S. Jackson Honorary Chapel at Jackson Professional Funeral Services, 3795 Eastern Blvd., Montgomery.

Sanford said that in life it seemed DuBose was empathic in how he taught young dancers.

“He could tell what you needed in the moment,” Sanford said.

It’s a trait he carried with him to his death.

“He was an organ donor,” Sanford said. “That just describes Foye to a ‘T.’ He would give you everything.”
