MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WIAT) — Finding a way to get to the polls can be challenging for some voters. But some organizations are helping voters overcome that challenge.
Jessica Fortune Barker, founder of Lift Our Vote, said she received a phone call yesterday from a recently injured voter.
“He called us, wanting to know ‘did we have a wheelchair’, and ‘could we come pick him up?’ And so due to his extenuating circumstances, that is where our services are best provided,” said Barker.
She is partnering with the League of Women Voters to offer free rides to the polls across the state on election day. “We were able to connect with some of our partner organizations, secure a wheelchair for him, and will be able to actually transport him to the polls on voter day,” said Barker.
Lift Our Vote is a non-partisan program aimed at helping voters in marginalized communities. Kathy Jones with the League of Women Voters said it can be hard to get to the polls, and that’s what the partnership is all about.
