Montgomery rocker Justin Turberville puts God first in musical anniversary gift for wife

Local rocker Justin Turberville had a blessing come into his life nine years ago when he and Jonna were married on Halloween. In the years since, he usually celebrates their anniversary by recording a cover from one of her favorite artists.

“The Cure, Depeche Mode or George Michael, even,” Justin said.

This year, things are a little different. Justin’s song for Jonna is an original called “My Surrender” that emphasizes the importance of faith and putting God first in their marriage.

“The only thing I know how to do decent is music,” he said. “I thought this would be the best gift I could give to my wife, putting God first on music. Humbling myself before God and saying, ‘Hey, I need you.'”

Justin, who recorded it in the Echo7 Sound studio of Tony Castaldo, said “My Surrender” came out of a lot of different situations in his life.

“Maybe getting a little older,” he said. “Maybe realizing that I’m going to have to pass away at some point, and what I do with my time here is very, very crucial. Very important… I want to be a part of Christian music. Of course, it’s going to sound like me, because I make weird sounding music. But I want to give my music to God, give it back to him.”
