DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — Alabamians are traveling across state lines in the hope of ringing in the new year as billionaires.
Friday’s Mega-Millions jackpot is up to $1.15 billion, the fifth largest in the game’s long-running history.
To get a chance at this massive payday, Alabama residents must drive across state lines to buy a $2 ticket.
“We shouldn’t have to; the state of Alabama should have it situated,” said ticket buyer Tony Davis Sr. of Dothan. ” We are bringing all of this money from Alabama to Florida. Why shouldn’t we be able to play in our own state each week.”
These sometimes lengthy drives are due to the constant failing of Alabama’s gaming bills.
Alabama Senator Greg Albritton (R-Atmore) and Representative Sam Jones (D-Mobile) sponsored the gaming bill in the last legislative session and say they plan to bring it back up in 2025.

The jackpot skyrocketed after no winning ticket was sold on Christmas Eve. The next drawing will be Friday at 10:00 p.m.
