AUBURN, Ala . (WRBL) – A federal investigation into the controversial removal of a bald eagle nest in Auburn by Hughston Homes remains ongoing, with few answers months after the incident. It remains unclear whether Hughston Homes’ actions will be deemed permissible under federal guidelines or if they will face consequences for the removal.
The nest, located on a 75-acre site planned for a 46-home development in the Heritage Ridge neighborhood, was removed on November 15, 2024, under a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) permit. The move sparked public outcry as many Auburn residents claim the nest had been active since 2017 and was home to a well-known pair of bald eagles affectionately named Jim and Pam.
Vanessa Kauffman, a spokesperson for the USFWS, addressed the investigation in a statement to WRBL on December 27:
“At this time, we are unable to provide further information, as it is the policy of the Office of Law Enforcement not to comment on ongoing investigations.”
The investigation coincides with a historic moment for the bald eagle. On December 17, President Joe Biden signed legislation officially designating the bald eagle as the national bird of the United States. While the bird has long been a symbol of American strength, its formal recognition underscores its importance to the nation’s identity.
