MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WHNT ) — There’s a variety of issues that lawmakers said they will take on in the upcoming legislative session, but some hit more close to home than others.
“And I feel comfortable that what we send out through the legislative process is a good thing,” said Sen. Jabo Waggoner (R-Vestavia Hills) about the 2025 legislature, which starts on Feb. 4. Waggoner said, at a minimum, a lottery bill we be debated.

“It would have been 600 million to our education, and general fund,” he explained. “Substantial revenue.” That’s revenue that would have come in from last year’s gambling bill had it passed.
Other areas of the state have different needs. In Huntsville, Rep. Marilyn Lands (D-Huntsville) is speaking with school systems about boosting mental health resources for students.
“We’ve got kids with so many challenges right now. So many stressors,” she said. “The depression. The anxiety. The suicide rate. They’re all just unacceptable. And we’ve got to reverse this trend.”
