Alabama’s Proposed Cell Phone Ban for Schools Moves Closer to Final Passage

(WDNews) – A bill that would ban the use of cell phones in Alabama K-12 classrooms has passed the state House of Representatives and is now headed to the Senate for final approval. The legislation, known as the FOCUS Act (HB166), aims to reduce distractions and improve the learning environment by prohibiting students from using wireless communication devices during school hours.

Under the bill, students would be required to turn off their cell phones and store them in a locker, car, or other designated area for the entire school day. The bill also gives local school boards until July 1, 2025, to develop and adopt specific policies regarding cell phone use. These policies would include consequences for violations and must be communicated to students, parents, and school staff.
