16th Street Baptist Church visitors center one of 15 new high dollar building permits

This past week, 15 new building permits were issued across Alabama for construction projects exceeding $1 million. One of those permits is for a major additions to the historic 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham.

A new visitors center and education center are in the works for the landmark, with a $7.9 million permits in place to get it done.

What’s new at 16th Street Baptist Church

The new building permit was obtained to complete a 13,000-square-foot education and visitors center at the church. The visitor center will be located adjacent to the existing church Parsonage and Sanctuary buildings.

Amenities include:

  • Meeting rooms
  • Dining area
  • Commercial kitchen
  • Support space to relieve the volume of tourists visiting the existing Sanctuary Building
