BARBOUR COUNTY, Ala. — A swarm of Africanized bees, often referred to as “killer bees,” was discovered this summer in Barbour County, Alabama, raising concerns about the potential threat they pose. Beekeeper Richard Praeger encountered the aggressive bees while attempting to remove what he initially thought was a honeybee colony from an abandoned home.
“As soon as I popped off the first siding, they were pretty attentive to what I was doing,” Praeger said. “They were very defensive of the colony.” Despite walking 150-200 yards away, Praeger managed to avoid being stung, although he found “literally hundreds of stingers” in his pants…
