Alabama Attorney General dismisses Brighton mayor in bingo case

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The mayor of Brighton has been dropped from the Alabama Attorney General’s case against the city regarding its operating of illegal bingo halls.

On Monday, a consent judgement was issued in civil court that dismissed Eddie Cooper, mayor of Brighton, from the case in his personal capacity. Cooper, who has been mayor since 2017, had owned property on West Street where a bingo hall had allegedly operated. Back in June, Alabama AG Steve Marshall and his staff raided different bingo halls operating in the area, claiming that they violated state law’s on illegal gambling.

In the order, the claims against Cooper were dropped, pending that he no longer allows any illegal gambling to go on at his property…
