2 Alabama women sentenced for role in elder fraud scheme

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — An Alabama mother and daughter duo were sentenced for their role in an elder fraud scheme, according to U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona on Wednesday.

The women pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Fairfield resident Cynthia Mixon, 50, was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison. Mykia Henderson, a 32-year-old woman from Moody, was given a prison sentence of seven years and three months.

Mixon and Henderson were the in-home caretakers of an elderly person between December 2020 and February 2022. According to plea agreements, Henderson and Mixon could access the elderly person’s financial information. They shared that access with each other and other conspirators.
