This iconic bird is rare in Alabama but ‘man is it fun to watch’

You may not think of grassland when you think of Alabama. But you’d be wrong: Alabama is home to prairie habitat, and along with it, some of its customary birds, like this one – the Scissor-tailed flycatcher.

“It is an iconic bird of the Alabama prairie regions,” said Scot Duncan, executive director of Alabama Audubon, the local chapter of the national society. “It’s not super abundant, but man is it fun to watch.”

Scissor-tailed flycatchers wouldn’t be much bigger than a robin or a songbird, except for their long tail that drags behind them. When the birds are in flight, the tail forks out into a V-shape…
