Alabama court upholds Cullman man’s 99-year prison sentence for murder

CULLMAN COUNTY, Ala. — Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the conviction of William Thomas Maddux, 35, of Cullman, for murder. Maddux was convicted in the Cullman County Circuit Court on October 16, 2024.

The evidence at trial showed that in November 2017 Maddux went to the residence of his mother and stepfather and was intoxicated at the time of his visit. Maddux refused to leave, and his stepfather went inside to call 911. Maddux broke into the house and shot and killed his stepfather who was on the phone with 911 when he died.

Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker’s office successfully prosecuted this case and obtained a guilty verdict. Maddux was sentenced to 99 years’ imprisonment for his murder conviction. Maddux sought to have his conviction reversed on appeal…
