MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Governor Kay Ivey and House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter have intensified their legal battle against the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) over its policy that restricts student-athletes transferring under the Creating Hope and Opportunity for Our Students’ Education Act (CHOOSE Act) from participating in school sports for a year.
On Friday, the pair filed an amended complaint and a preliminary-injunction motion to contest the AHSAA’s policy. The filings also challenge the AHSAA’s “Restitution Rules,” which impose penalties on students and schools for ineligible participation, even if they play under a court order that could later be reversed or vacated.
Governor Ivey expressed her disapproval of the AHSAA’s actions, stating, “It was bad enough when the AHSAA decided to sideline CHOOSE Act student-athletes in violation of state law. It is even worse to learn that the AHSAA will penalize schools and students for playing pursuant to the court order Speaker Ledbetter and I obtained just two weeks ago.”…
